all Registered Bands are required to show at the Calder Race Track.
This is the gauge for the season...the showing. Its usually the indicator of what the parade will be like.

I've made my PERSONAL choice already...so my head is allllllll a twitter with boots and bling...and ....VIBESSSS!!

WHY: IS CARNIVALLL!!! 



So the madness of Caribana, and the “cool down” in Hamilton have come and gone, meaning the next major carnival to look forward to, especially for all the Carnival Nationz (CNz) peeps and them, is Miami Carnival come Canada Thanksgiving long weekend (SUNDAY Oct 10th).

For the second year running CNz will be bringing out a mas band affiliate in Miami, CNzMiami but this time we adding some twists and surprises for all would-be masqueraders. CNzMiami will have brand new costumes – we mean new designs for sale – based off the same theme that the parent band CNz played for Caribana… “A Tribute to SPARROW”. So if you could not make Caribana for some strange reason, or your costume mash-up (for a few good reasons), or you just want to play in a new costume, then CNzMiami has everything on offer.

CNzMiami will be launching in Miami on August 20th @ DECO Lounge

Costumes will cost - $165US for backline

Remember: CNzMiami is a full ALL-INCLUSIVE experience – so the price includes a fully stocked alcohol bar, food (breakfast & lunch) and top DJs from T&T, Miami and Toronto.

CNz CARIBANA masqueraders:
For CNz Caribana costume holders – i.e. people who played mas with CNz at Caribana 2010 and still have their costumes and are planning on jumping with CNz in Miami, then there is a MANDATORY registration fee that must be paid in order to join CNzMiami. This fee is $90US. This can be paid via www.carnivalnationz.com or directly to a CNz Band Leader (Marcus @ 416.565.4079 ~ Bryce @ 416.985.8488 ~ Dwayne @ 416.930.9650).

You cannot play mas in CNzMiami unless you have either:
1). Bought a CNzMiami specific costume; or
2). Paid the mandatory Registration Fee for all CNz Caribana masqueraders (and you must be a registered 2010 CNz masquerade).

All others will not be escorted out the band, just like last year…

Band Launch....but no theme reveal. hmm..Saturday July 10, 2010, in conjuction with a Birthday Bash, Wassi ones will be Launching their 2010 Presentation for Miami Carnival 2010. Special Guest artist Kerwin Dubois.

The venue i believe is Deco Lounge at 606 E Hallandale Beach Boulevard. Mark your calendars people. They coming fast and furious.

The thing start!

Ok Another Section Launch looms in the horizon. Injection Promotions - a section in the yet to be released Wassi Ones presentation for Miami Carnival 2010- will be showcasing their designs on July 3rd at Islands United party Cheers.

I've confirmed that YES costumes will be displayed although the Lead Band Wassi Ones has not yet [well not that I know of at least - but i working on it] the theme for the 2010 presentation.

Today, im featuring the section producer - Skandalous Designs fronted by Melissa Prescott - a friend of mine and a former Flava Girls masquerader :), and her sister Arleesha. In her own words, here is why she decided to take the step into the world of section production in Miami Carnival..

In dire need of change and inspired by D’Untouchables, 1st Dimension, Flava Girls and Vibrationzz, my sister (Arleesha Prescott) and I just wanted to try ah ting and see what would happen. Tired of adding rhinestones and feathers to costumes purchased from other bands we would play mas with year after year. We did our research and inquired in 2008 how exactly to go about bringing a section with a band for Miami Carnival. Some bands wanted money upfront and had pre ordered costumes which left no room for creative freedom. That was not the way we wanted to do things. Then there were bands whose main question was “who is your designer”. Which made us sit down and think, does anyone design their own costumes anymore? Or is ordering from China, India or Trinidad the “in thing”. Then we came across One Island Body Paint Band, which is a New York based band. At that time the carnivals were split between Broward and Miami. I found that the Band Leader Rolando Jarvis was able to answer all my questions and gave me the creative freedom to design and show what we could do. Skandalous debuted in 2009 and it was more work than we ever imagined, not to mention, a learning experience. Now for 2010 we are still with One Island whose theme is AVATAR: Return to the Road, and have the lead section in the band, PANDORA. Another year, higher expectations, more work but seeing it all come to life is worth it. This has definitely been a learning experience, but with every year we're getting better.>

Speaking from my own experience, producing sections for bands in Florida is no small feat.  Most times the band reaps all the benefit from your work. The financial gain is minimal, and once you successfully establish a brand with one band, you lose your masqueraders if you leave that band because you've been associated with the Main band...not just your section. So I give you much respect Melissa. Keep focused and follow your dream. Much Love..and I will see you on the ROOOAADD!!!

Through my search of Macco Book...lol. I was able to find information on the theme for another of the bands for Miami Broward Carnival for 2010. Major Players will be presenting "Aura" for the 2010 Carnival . as of yet no other information has been provided regarded Launches, but at least this is a sign that preperations are being made by bands for the Miami Broward Carnival event. Miami Broward One Carnival is having its first bandleaders meeting in preparation for the 2010 Miami Carnival Season this week.

None of the websites have been updated yet, but hopefully this is the stimulus to have the ball rolling. Stay Tuned!.

Usually this meeting is the first indicator of the number of bands that will be participating in the event. Lets hope this is a "peaceful" celebration this year.

This year Carnival Nationz has decided to pay special attention to one of the greatest figures in Caribbean history, something that has never been done before. An entertainer who needs no introduction… the "KING OF CALYPSO"… will be honoured in true CNz fashion for all the awe inspiring music that he has provided to us over the years. Call him by whatever name you know him: "Slinger Francisco" ~ "D'Birdie" ~ "The King"... we at CNz will simply call him "SPARROW D'LEGEND"

As was done last year, the theme for Toronto Carnival is also used in the Miami Carnival competition. The Miami Carnival Nationz information is as follows:

Hello?? Hello?? Is anyone out there??
Hmm there is some dust on this blog...and I’d like to apologize for that
What happened is ....what usually happens..
I got sooo overwhelmed with the machine that is a mas band..
That I barely had time to breathe much less blog...

But I’m back...
and NO ...I’m not going to Trinidad...
and not even commenting on it...
Maybe on the MUSIC....
Unless the evil jumbie that starts talking to me around now...
after I have made the single, sober, mature decision to not go to carnival..
and certain people tempting me ..thanks XoXo,...
But as of today...
I'm not going to Trinidad...

But I've also made another Major decision

After 13 plus years of being involved in Miami carnival as either a promoter, or section producer, or a full out mas band producer...
I...
gulp..
am taking a break in 2010..
and doing nothing...but observe...
Wear a costume...go to the fetes...see the people that I INVITE to Miami every year...

 I’m soo excited....
Already...there are people pressing me to change my mind...
And even I am a little nervous about sitting out...
I don’t know what that even feels like anymore..

But what has happened to me...
Is something I never believe COULD happen..
I started Resenting carnival..
Instead of looking forward to it with excitement and optimism...
I would see the "DRAMA"...the pressure to produce...the politics....the bad karma with contracts...
Yes the finished result was always worth it..

 but I think that until I rediscover my love for the spectacle
That it undoubtedly will affect MY creative process....
and I couldn’t intuit what my masqueraders would want....because I could place myself in the moment...and see what I would want..

For 2010 ....in terms of Miami Carnival..
I am on a well deserved break..
I think I want to play pan, enter the calypso competiton again....
and finally get to hang out with the sisters, and friends who have supported me with my mas endeavors for sooo many years...
Every year I send them off to the parties..
They call on me while I’m in the mas camp...
They come check on me,
Make sure I eat...
Calm me down when I spaz out...
.reassure me that my choices are good...and that they appreciate my efforts.
Come pick up passes to the SAME fetes that I wish I could go to...but I’m trapped ...
..Girls I love you... Judes, Dania, Rhina...I LOVE YOU :)

I’m excited...
and it means...that I have time as a true spectator...
to give so much more to this blog...

So I can rediscover my love .....My mas...
