So...I saw the boy this weekend in concert at Club Revolutions.
This was another of the birthday celebrations. My sister and friends had put together to be up in the bottle area for the night....which gave us a perfect vantage point for the party...but still gave us a private space to celebrate. And Father LORD did we celebrate!! We were in a box directly above and in front of the stage so we could look down into the rest of the club ...and more importantly look directly at the boy on stage. Dania girl…I missed you!! You would have loved it!
VIP in the club was in the pit....down below in the middle...while regular admission was on the sides of the club. I remember during the night worrying about the poor bouncers that had to stop TRINI feters from storming them to go down to the middle to get a better vantage point, and was happy as hell that while we still could see everybody we had our private feteing area.
I had been in a state of constant excitement for the past few days...busting out with excerpts of "Not Going Home" and "Slow Wine"... My sister and Judy were probably tired of me by 2pm...when I kept instructing them it was time to start to get ready. So I was in an absolute mess when it was time for the show to start.
Dj's did the filler thing until Boy came on. To be honest I can't remember exactly who they were. I was nursing a drink by then...and watching eagerly as the crowd started filling up. Giselle the Wassi One was hosting...and 103.5 djs..including my punkin Walshy Killa did a good job of hyping up the crowd until the feature act. I remember wishing that Machel had come with a band...instead of him performing on tracks...but since he's a solo artist now...I’ll have to get accustomed to that.
After sneaking out of our area a couple times to see people...I had to run my tail back up the stairs when I heard them announce it was time for the boy to come on.
He didn’t disappoint.
Considering the last Madison Square Garden show that he had with all the gimmicks and additional artists, this performance allowed an intimacy that the audience and Machel had to appreciate.
It was him ..and us...and I swear everyone in that room would feel like he was performing just for them. He had us in his hands from the first track. And I think he had us in his hearts when you saw his eyes widen when the crowd kept responding to him. We sang every lyric, every ad lib...every HUIII.
There was no space for theatrics...a raw, open delivery of his songs...and I think a true representation of TALENT. One man...on a crowded stage...giving himself to the people who LOVE him. No lull in the performances...no breaks to rest and recover. It was Machel..no HD. Just Machel. It reminded me of his earliest videotaped performances...the little boy ...on a HUGE savannah stage....now the grown man ...facing the critical judgment of the people he still represents...doing the thing he loves and we love too.
He is a treasure. Our Treasure. The show was amazing. I’m proud of our boy....and as always...I’m a TRUE Fan.

But he always reminding me....that he is a voice....our voice...MY VOICE...for Soca...
Allyou know allyou grew up with the man....just like I did...walking the walk,..and the drama...
Remember when they said he wouldn't pass O'Levels?? and why...cause he was too distracted??
And before that he was too YOUNG to be doing what he was???
The man grew up in front of our eyes....

So...I was lucky enough to go see JESUS [for the uninitiated Machel JESUS Montano] in Madison Square Garden earlier this year. Much to the amusement of the people around me, I had a RELIGIOUS experience during the show. Outside of my shoe issues [4 inch NEW heels in NY when you have to take the subway and run - things i DON'T do in Miami is NOT a Good idea] Much thanks for the BANGING Mojitos at TGIF before. I couldn't feel my toes much lest my hands after those , so it was all good.
Anyways...Everybody knows about my love affair with JESUS and David Rudder is no joke either. But I Happened across this on Guanaguanare this morning...and again I was transported. Moved to Tears. I'm such a PUNK and I guess a quiet patriot.
This was SO a MOMENT for me. My cousin who was with me probably thought I was in a coma, or having a breakdown or something. I mean people were screaming and jumping and wining around me. And i could not MOVE. I had my hand up in the air like i was in church--trying to touch them, tough the moment, Hold on to it forever. I think that i did. I didn't need to scream and to wine would be to not respect the moment that was going on .
It was like..Like HOPE for me. Like we Trinidadians could deal with everything and anything if we could still have THIS. THIS moment. Like a cleansing. We could surmount anything as a people..if we could just hold on to THIS.
The Bele dancers in their white were like Trinidadian angels. The white skirts sweeping away all the dirt, all the politics all the grime all the evil. Yes its a pain, but it's a sweet pain with love and hurt and anger and happiness and pride and hope wrapped up in it.
David Rudder was like a Baptist priest: "Throw out your sorrow children , throw out your sorrow children." He was talking to ME. I DOH CARE WHO ELSE WAS THERE!!! he was telling me...he left where ever the ass he was to come
sing these words to me...Throw out your sorrow children. I know it was a concert...I know everybody else paid there ticket to come see BOY...but That performance, that song gave me a MOMENT.
Gave me hope, put some pride in my soul straightened my back so in spite of everything I can say. Yes Trinidadian - from the land of Oil and Music

So ive been super busy with work...and avoiding even talking about Carnival cause I didn't go to Trinidad. AGAIN!! sigh...
So like most of us that didn't make the trek Ive been living vicariously through ctnt and facebook statuses. But NO hate....
anyways....i actually left home last night to go to an event here.
I went to Karibana at Sosta....hoping to capture a taste of Trinidad carnival. I needed a fix.
It was good. I mean....I've been out of the loop for a little bit so when I first got there it felt like i was in a teeny bopper party. But soon the old heads started showing up. That venue makes for a good party anyways. Not too small not too big. and i have to give Dorenzo credit ...his set was on. I wonder who the new mike man was???
The highlight of my night however was the Machel set. God I love that Boy. lol. What other current soca artist can you play a 45 minute set..of straight Machel....hit after hit after hit. When the played Water Flowing I was sooooo transported. and Vendors......allyuh remember that? Vendors??? They even played Sun...that song not usually in circulation anymore. so im thinking it done and wayyyyyyyyyyy....To early for your love!! WHATTTTTT! Utterly transported. UTTERLY!
Twas a good night.
Now im just waiting for MARCH!! Sigh when the boy will be performing just for me in Miami..for my birthday. No I not delusional. Its FATE Dammit!! A celebration of the artist that is my voice of soca...throughout all my life experiences...carnival and otherwise...
